Altos de Chavón.

  • LA ROMANA AND ALTOS DE CHAVON TOUR FULL DAY

Driving east from San Pedro de Macoris, past expansive fields of shoulder-high sugar cane, visitors will come to La Romana, a city built and maintained by the sugar mills. The incessant production of sugar fills the air with the sweet smell of molasses.

But the principal attraction of the region is Altos de Chavón, a re-created 16th century Italian village beside the mesmerizing Chavón River. At its founding in 1981, Altos de Chavón was declared "an artists' village" by its creators who dedicated it to the service of the fine and applied arts. Its other-worldly cobblestone streets and quaint architecture conceal charming shops, fine restaurants, intimate bars, artisans workshops, a church, a vast amphitheater, an archaeological museum, and a university specializing in design

Construction began on the Village of Altos de Chavón in 1976. It was Charles Bludhorn, president of the Gulf & Western Corporation, who got the idea to construct this 16th-century Mediterranean villa on the heights above the Chavón River as a birthday present for his daughter.

The Italian Roberto Copa was in charge of making Bludhorn's idea a reality. This villa transports us to Mediterreanean Europe with the most spectacular views of the Chavón River and Caribbean Sea. Altos de Chavón has a church, restaurants, art galeries, Taíno museum, stores, discoteque, art studios, a school of design, and an incredible ampitheater.
The school of design of Altos de Chavón is associated with the Parson's School of Design in New York. The Church of San Estanislao is in the center of the village.
Its name honors Pope Juan Pablo II, for St. Stanley is the patron saint of Poland, the pope's country of origin.

The ampitheater in Altos de Chavón seats more than 5,000. It was inaugurated in 1982 with a presentation by Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santana. Many other artists and rock groups have played on this beautiful stage, such as Heart, English Beat, America, Tania Maria, Scandal, Sergio Mendes, Juan Luis Guerra, Michel Camilo, Spiro Gyra, Duran Duran, etc .
National and international artists present their spectacular shows here throughout the year.
This Mediterraanean village is a font of inspiration for the artists who live here to study and work. Location: La Romana, Dominican Republic. It is 100 kilometers from the city of Santo Domingo and about 15 minutes from the Casa de Campo complex. RIO CHAVON:
This river served as a stage in the much celebrated films Apocalypse Now and Rambo.

A voyage on small boats along the Chavón River combines perfectly with our excusion to the village and Catalina Island, which includes lunch and transportation from the hotel, as well as an expert multi-lingual guide; taxes included.
